Hi Jake,
Dissolved oxygen occurs in a couple of ways:
1. Diffusion of oxygen from the atmosphere into the water
(diffusion is when molecules move from places of high
concentration to places of low concentration)
2. Aquatic plants photosynthesizing and releasing oxygen
(just as other plants do)...but into water instead of into
the air.
